Lake Manyara Highlights
  • Total Park Area: 330 km² (70% lake during rainy season)
  • Famous For: Tree-Climbing Lions & Canopy Walk
  • Bird Species: Over 400 species, including flamingos
  • Landscape: Rift Valley Escarpment & Fig Forests

When legendary author Ernest Hemingway journeyed through Tanzania in the 1930s, he described Lake Manyara as "the loveliest lake I had ever seen in Africa." Tucked snugly beneath the towering red-rock cliffs of the Great Rift Valley, this gem is a vivid contrast to the dry open grasslands of the Serengeti.

Entering the park through the northern gate, you are greeted not by open plains, but by an unexpected, jungle-like groundwater forest. Fed by underground springs filtering down from the volcanic Ngorongoro highlands, massive wild fig and mahogany trees form a dense canopy overhead.

The Myth & Reality of Tree-Climbing Lions

While leopards are anatomically built for climbing trees, lions typically stay on the ground. However, Lake Manyara's lions have mastered the art of sprawling across the horizontal branches of umbrella acacia and sausage trees, often 5 to 7 meters above the ground!

During the humid midday hours, climbing into the breezy canopy helps them avoid biting tsetse flies on the forest floor and affords an unobstructed view of passing buffalo calves and zebras.

The Treetop Canopy Walkway: Bird's-Eye Perspective

For an unforgettable adventure, walk the Manyara Treetop Walkway. Stretching 370 meters across a series of suspension bridges with viewing decks wrapped around giant mahogany trunks, you walk 18 meters high above the forest floor.

Troops of playful blue monkeys and olive baboons jump through the canopy beside you, while silvery-cheeked hornbills and emerald cuckoos call through the leaves.

Alkaline Lake & Maji Moto Hot Springs

Emerging from the dense forest, the scenery opens into sparkling alkaline shores. Lake Manyara has no natural outlet, creating soda-rich water where millions of microscopic algae bloom, attracting clouds of pink lesser and greater flamingos.

Further south along the rocky shore, you reach Maji Moto—natural geothermal hot springs bubbling up from deep tectonic fissures at 60°C (140°F), hot enough to boil an egg!

Because Lake Manyara is compact, combining a morning game drive and canopy walk here with an afternoon drive into Karatu or Tarangire gives you two completely different ecosystems in a single day!
