Hike through dense rainforest with colobus monkeys to Mandara Hut. Optional walk to Maundi Crater (8 km, 4–5 hrs, Mandara Hut).
Emerge from rainforest into open moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels. Spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi (12 km, 5–7 hrs, Horombo Hut).
Hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m) for altitude acclimatization, returning to Horombo Hut for afternoon rest (4–6 km, 3–4 hrs, Horombo Hut).
Cross the lunar alpine desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Early dinner and sleep before midnight summit push (10–15 km, 6–8 hrs, Kibo Hut).
Midnight ascent via Gilman's Point (5,685m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate at summit, descend to Kibo for rest, and continue to Horombo Hut (20–27 km, 12–15 hrs, Horombo Hut).
Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive certificates and transfer to Moshi (18–20 km, 5–7 hrs, Hotel in Moshi).
