The Maasai Mountain of God

Earth's Most Unique Active Volcano

Rising dramatically over 2,100 meters above the floor of the East African Rift Valley to an altitude of 2,962 meters (9,718 ft), Ol Doinyo Lengai translates in the Maa language of the Maasai to "Mountain of God".

To the Maasai community of the Ngorongoro and Natron region, this majestic cone is sacred. Elders and women journey to the volcano's base to pray to Enkai (their Creator) for rain, healthy cattle, and fertility. Geologists from across the globe revere it equally: it is the only active volcano on the planet that erupts natrocarbonatite lava.

The Science of the "White Beard"

Lengai's unique sodium- and potassium-rich carbonatite lava erupts at a relatively cool 510°C (compared to 1,100°C for normal basaltic lava). Extruded as a jet-black fluid resembling motor oil, it rapidly reacts with atmospheric moisture within 24 hours to form white minerals — transforming the volcanic summit into brilliant snowy-white contours that Maasai elders believe symbolize the white beard of Enkai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Important details to prepare for climbing Oldonyo Lengai and visiting Lake Natron.

Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is physically demanding, steep, and rigorous. While no technical mountaineering equipment (ropes or ice axes) is needed, hikers gain approximately 1,600 meters of vertical altitude over a short 5-kilometer path. The terrain alternates between loose volcanic ash, slippery scree, and hardened volcanic ridges. A good level of cardiovascular fitness, sturdy high-ankle hiking boots, and trekking poles are mandatory.

The trek begins around midnight (00:00) for two primary reasons. First, the Great Rift Valley desert temperatures regularly exceed 35°C to 40°C during daylight hours; ascending at night keeps climbers cool and hydrated. Second, reaching the crater rim at dawn (around 06:00 AM) rewards climbers with an unforgettable sunrise over Lake Natron, Mount Gelai, and the vast Gregory Rift floor.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only known active volcano on planet Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This lava contains virtually no silica, allowing it to melt and erupt at roughly 510°C (about half the temperature of conventional basaltic lava). It flows dark brown or black like liquid mud, but reacts rapidly with atmospheric humidity within hours to turn snow-white. Maasai elders believe the resulting white peaks resemble the beard of God Enkai.

Key equipment includes:
  • High-ankle hiking boots with deep tread to navigate loose scree
  • A bright headlamp with fresh batteries and backup
  • Pair of collapsible trekking poles (essential for braking during descent)
  • Ankle gaiters to keep volcanic ash and fine dust out of your boots
  • Thermal fleece layer, windbreaker, and warm beanie (summit temperatures can drop to 5°C before dawn)
  • Minimum 2.5 to 3 liters of water per person plus electrolyte powder
  • High-calorie snacks (nuts, dried fruits, energy bars)

Yes! We frequently design combo packages connecting Oldonyo Lengai with Serengeti National Park via the remote Klein's Gate or northern access route, or heading south through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is also an extraordinary pre-climb acclimatization workout prior to tackling Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru.
